If you mostly type long lists of digits, try the 10-key typing test instead - it's designed for the numeric keypad.
Which finger types each number?
In touch typing, each number is typed by the same finger that types the letter directly below it. Keep your hand anchored to the home row and reach up, then return.
| Keys | Finger |
|---|---|
| 1 | Left pinky |
| 2 | Left ring finger |
| 3 | Left middle finger |
| 4 and 5 | Left index finger |
| 6 and 7 | Right index finger |
| 8 | Right middle finger |
| 9 | Right ring finger |
| 0 | Right pinky |
Why number typing is hard
The number row is two rows away from the home row, so it's easy to lose your place. Symbols like $ and % also need the Shift key. Practice slowly at first and check that your fingers return to the home row after every number.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use the number row or the numpad?
Use the number row when numbers appear inside text, and the numpad for long runs of digits like spreadsheets or invoices.
How is WPM calculated with numbers?
The same as with words: every five correctly typed characters, including digits and symbols, count as one word.
Is there a lesson for the number row?
Yes. The Numbers lesson in our touch typing course introduces the digits two at a time.
