1 minute typing test benchmarks
These are typical scores on a one minute test. Longer tests usually come out a few WPM lower because of fatigue.
| Level | WPM | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 20+ | Still looking at the keys. Work on the home row first. |
| Average | 40+ | Typical adult speed for everyday use. |
| Job ready | 50+ | Meets most office and admin requirements. |
| Fast | 70+ | Transcription, support and writing roles. |
| Expert | 95+ | Top few percent of typists. |
Why one minute is the standard
One minute is long enough that a lucky start or a single slip doesn't decide your score, and short enough that you can stay fully focused. It also makes WPM easy to understand: it's literally the number of words you typed correctly in that minute.
