Learn Touch Typing in 30 Days: A Day-by-Day Schedule
· 6 min read
You can learn to touch type in 30 days with about 20 minutes of practice a day. The schedule below follows the free TypingAcademy course in order, with a few rest and review days built in. By day 30, most people know every letter key by feel and type 25-40 WPM without looking.
Before day 1
- Use a proper keyboard if you can. Laptop keyboards are fine.
- Sit with your feet flat and your screen at eye level. Our posture guide covers the details.
- Decide on a fixed time each day. Habit matters more than willpower.
- Take one one minute test and note your score. It's okay if you look at the keys for this one.
Week 1: the home row (days 1-7)
| Day | Practice | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | F and J, D and K | Find F and J by the bumps |
| 2 | S and L, A and ; | All eight fingers resting on the row |
| 3 | G and H and repeat days 1-2 | Two stars on every lesson |
| 4 | Home row words | Read the whole word first |
| 5 | Home row review | 95% accuracy |
| 6 | Drill below, three times | No looking down at all |
| 7 | Rest, or one easy review lesson |
This drill hides the on-screen keyboard. If you get lost, put your index fingers back on the bumps and keep going.
Week 2: top row (days 8-14)
| Day | Practice | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 8-9 | Top row lessons 1-3 | Reach up and come straight back |
| 10-11 | Top row lessons 4-6 | Keep other fingers anchored |
| 12 | Top row review | Two stars |
| 13 | Typing practice on weak keys | |
| 14 | Rest, then one 1 minute test | Compare with day 0 |
Week 3: bottom row and capitals (days 15-21)
| Day | Practice | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 15-16 | Bottom row lessons | Curl fingers down, not the whole hand |
| 17 | Bottom row review | Two stars |
| 18-19 | Shift and punctuation | Use the opposite hand's Shift |
| 20 | Weak key practice | |
| 21 | Rest |
Next key l, use your right ring finger
Week 4: real text and speed (days 22-30)
| Day | Practice | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| 22-23 | Numbers and symbols | Find the number row by feel |
| 24-26 | Speed building | Steady rhythm |
| 27-28 | Easy test, then the standard test | 3 rounds each |
| 29 | Three minute test | Stay relaxed |
| 30 | One minute test | Compare with day 0 |
If you fall behind
Missed a day? Just carry on from where you stopped; don't try to catch up by doubling a session. Tired hands make mistakes, and the mistakes become habits. If a lesson takes three or four tries to get two stars, that's normal. The home row and Shift lessons are the ones people repeat most.
After day 30
Your speed will keep improving for months if you keep practicing a little each day. The 30 to 60 WPM plan picks up from here.
